Mildred Waite McCarty of Kimball Farms, who was associated with Girls Incorporated of Pittsfield in various capacities for more than 65 years, died yesterday after a series of illnesses. She was 92.
Immediately following her 1930 gradation from the former Boston School of Physical Education, which now is part of Northeastern University, Mrs. McCarty came to Pittsfield as a physical-education teacher at the Girls' League, which later became the Girls Club and then Girls Inc.
Served as president
In 1935, she was elected to the board of the Girls' League, which she later served as executive director and president. From 1955 until 1959, she was a member of the national board of directors of Girls' Clubs of America and served as secretary of the national board in 1956.
Camp Witawentin, now a part of Girls Inc., was one of Mrs. McCarty's favorite youth programs and she was co-chairwoman of the drive to reopen the camp after World War II. She continued to work and support the camp and Girls Inc.'s various fund-raising activities, including its current capital campaign. In 1989, she was honored as Volunteer of the Year for Girls Inc.
Mrs. McCarty was active in many other civic and youth-oriented organizations. She served on the Girl Scout Council and was co-founder of Camp Marion White. She was president of the League of Women Voters in 1943 and on the board of the Pittsfield Taxpayers Association.
In 1996, she was honored by the Rotary Club of Pittsfield with the Dr. David B. Kagan Award for her service to the community. She was manager of the Junior League Thrift Shop in Pittsfield for many years.
A competitive tennis player, she won many city and county championships from the 1930s through the 1950s. In 1947, she was involved in hosting the first professional tennis touring team managed by Bobby Riggs. After the matches in the Berkshires, Pancho Gonzalez, Pancho Segura and Frankie Parker attended a reception at the McCarty home on South Mountain Road in Pittsfield. She continued to play tennis into her mid-80s.
Born in Brattleboro, Vt., on Aug. 29, 1909, daughter of John Alfred and Ellen Marcy Waite, she spent much of her childhood in southern Vermont and Lexington, Mass., where she graduated from high school.
On Jan. 1, 1933, she met her future husband, Orin P. McCarty of San Antonio on the top of Mount Greylock. They were married Sept. 23, 1933, in Williamsville, Vt. Mr. McCarty died in 1999.
Mrs. McCarty leaves three children, Patricia M. DuBow of South Nyack, N.Y., Philip McCarty of Pittsfield and Deborah M. Brennan of Poway, Calif.; five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
Mrs. McCarty was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, where a memorial service will be held in late October. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Girls Inc.
