Paul E. Williams, 61, of 33 Howe Road died yesterday morning at Hillcrest Commons of cancer.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 29, 1939, son of Francis S. and Emily Breault Williams, he attended local schools and was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph's Central High School.
Mr. Williams served in the Army for 20 years in Korea and France in the military police and later as a criminal investigation agent. He was discharged July 31, 1977, and served with the Army Reserve Command at Fort McPherson, Ga., as a physical security specialist for 21 years, retiring June 1, 1999. He then returned to Pittsfield.
He attended Notre Dame Church and was past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6538 in Townsend from 1981-1982 and from 1986-1987. He was responsible for fund-raising efforts for a new pavilion at the post.
He enjoyed fishing and sports, especially baseball and football, and was a speed skater in his younger years. He also was a race car fan.
He leaves two sons, Scott E. Williams and Patrick E. Williams, both of Lowell; four brothers, John S. Williams of Pittsfield, Dr. Robert F. Williams of Taverinier, Fla., Richard A. Williams of Farmington, Conn., and James A. Williams of Lanesboro; two sisters, Elizabeth W. Harrington and JoAnn W. Beaulieu, both of Pittsfield; a grandson, and his former wife, Mary E. Rourke of Lowell.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 8:15 a.m. at the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at Notre Dame Church. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare of the Berkshires or Notre Dame Church in care of the funeral home.
