Carl E. Callahan, 78

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Carl Edward Callahan, 78, of 39 Joan Drive died in his sleep Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at home.

Born in Adams on Sept. 13, 1933, son of Louis E. and Esther Hunter Dick Callahan, he graduated in 1952 from Adams Memorial High School, where he was an outstanding three-sport athlete. He was on numerous Berkshire County and Western Mass. all-star teams. He was an active member of his high school reunion committee. He moved to Westfield in 1956 and to Pittsfield in 1998.

Mr. Callahan was employed by Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, Conn., since 1956. He was a lead man in environmental control systems until his retirement in 1993. He first worked at the former Arnold Print Works in Adams.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield. During his years in Westfield, he was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and was a member of the choir and past president of the St. Mary's Men's Club for many years. He was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Mary.

His first wife, the former Lorraine Helen Harrison, whom he married Jan. 3, 1953, in Adams, died April 21, 1997.

He and his wife, the former Mary Roscoe Benoit, were married on July 1, 2000, in St. Theresa's Church in Pittsfield.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Faye A. Wood and her husband, Michael; two sons, Robert C. Callahan and John M. Callahan and his wife, Ann; two stepsons, Keith Benoit and his wife, Mary, and Craig Benoit; a stepdaughter, Lisa Benoit; a brother, John G. Callahan of California; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Rougeau, Kate Levesque, Michael Wood Jr., Susan Callahan, Sarah Benoit, Rebecca, Taylor and Ian Benoit; four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Madison Rougeau, Emmalie Wood and Delaney Levesque, and cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen Ann; his sisters Dorothy, in infancy, and Esther H. Quinn; and brothers Clyde, Clifford and Ewart Callahan.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Callahan will be celebrated Monday morning, Jan. 30, at 10 at Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield. Burial will take in the spring in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Jan. 29, from 3 to 6 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Bencivenga Funeral Home, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for Eileen Barrett Foundation or the American Heart Association through the funeral home.
