DALTON, Mass. — Gerald K. "Jerry" Engwer, 89, of East Deming Street died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox.

Born in Becket on Dec. 11, 1921, he was the son of Charles and Fanny Culver Engwer.

An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he entered active duty on Sept. 19, 1942, and was honorably discharged Sept. 5, 1945. During his tour, he flew 51 combat missions with the 13th Air Force as a flight engineer on B-24 bombers in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater campaign ribbon with six battle stars; Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious achievement in combat missions, Good Conduct Medal; Presidential unit citation ribbon; and sharp shooter and marksman medals.

In 2006, Mr. Engwer participated in the Veterans History Project in association with the Dalton Council on Aging. His interview sharing his experiences, sacrifices and courage while serving our country continues to be aired periodically on local television.

Mr. Engwer was employed by the Massachusetts Highway Department for 37 years, retiring in 1986.

He loved nature and spent much of his early retirement years hiking, hunting and fishing. North Mountain at Holiday Farm was a favorite destination where he spent several summers spotting for the Berkshire Mountain Bike Races. A lifelong Dodger fan, he loved all baseball and attended many games of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was known in the community as an avid walker and a regular at Duff and Del's where he spent endless hours over coffee and with his friends. His dry sense of humor was appreciated by all who knew him.

His wife of 65 years, the former Doris Mae Watkins, died April 24, 2011.

He leaves two sons, David Engwer and his wife, Pam, of Plymouth and Jerry Engwer and his wife, Sharon, of the town of Florida; three daughters, Judith LaPlante and her husband, Robert, of Springfield, Dianne Garvey and her husband, Michael, of Dalton and Darlene D'Avella and her husband, Buddy, of Pittsfield; two sisters, Gloria Connnor of Dalton and Elsie Rucio of Pittsfield, 21 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

His brothers Lester Engwer, Norman Engwer and William Engwer, and sisters Marian Stutz and Jean Scott predeceased him.
