Elizabeth E. Furlong

Dalton - Elizabeth E. Furlong, 88, of 38 East Deming St., and formerly of the town of Washington, died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Becket on March 21, 1919, daughter of Richard A. and Charlotte Frisbie Ellsworth, she was a graduate of Chester High School and a 1939 graduate of Cooley-Dickinson Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Furlong was a civil defense nurse, as well as a nurse and nursing instructor with the American Red Cross. She and her husband, the late Joseph Furlong, both dedicated to the care of the elderly and disables, owned and operated both Mapleview Nursing Home in the town of Washington and Valley View Nursing Home in Lenox until 1969, and Westfield Manor in Westfield until their retirement in 1992.

She was a member of First Congregational Church of Becket, where she served as treasurer until the time of her death. She was active in church affairs.

Her husband, Joseph H. Furlong Jr., whom she married July 19, 1941, died June 10, 1997.

Mrs. Furlong leaves a daughter, Elizabeth O. Stokes of Pittsfield; two sons, Richard E. Furlong of Becket and David F. Furlong of Dalton; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Charlotte Simmons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Elizabeth E. Furlong, who died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, will be held in the spring at the First Congregational Church of Becket at a time and date to be announced. Burial will be in Becket Center Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. Donations in her memory may be made to First Congregational Church of Becket in care of the BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. Mrs. Furlong enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and was active in all aspects of the church. She was especially famous for her baked beans at the church fairs.

She was an avid reader and kept up an active book exchange with her family. Mrs. Furlong was also predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Ellsworth.
