Bernice Barbara Steele

Dalton - Bernice Barbara Steele, 76, of 141 East St. died Monday at Hillcrest Commons, where she had resided for a short time.

Born in Pittsfield on May 12, 1931, daughter of Raymond E. and Irene Fillio Hopkins, she was a 1949 graduate of the former Dalton High School.

Mrs. Steele was a homemaker and also kept the books for her husband's business, Bud's Chain Saw Repair.

She was a member of Dalton Congregational Church and enjoyed crafts, needlepoint and sewing.

She and her husband, Earl E. "Bud" Steele, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary Nov. 20.

Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Barbara A. Isenhart and Janet F. LeBarron, both of Pittsfield; a son, Edwin E. Steele of Dalton; a sister, Sandra B. Hopkins of Dalton; four brothers, Edwin R. Hopkins of Belton, Mo., Norman R. Hopkins of Pittsfield, David C. Hopkins of Dalton and Francis C. Hopkins of Westfield; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Bernice Hopkins Steele, who died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, will be conducted tomorrow at 11 a.m. at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Lyle Larson. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Steele also leaves her grandchildren, George J., Theresa L. and Lori A. Isenhart, Shannon L. and Michael J. Steele, Matthew W. and Richard E. Clemo, and Barbara E. Warner; and her great-grandchildren, Shelby A. and Justin C. Blattner, Violet M. and Vincent M. Isenhart, A.J. Gingras, and Jacob D. and William R. Warner.

She was predeceased by two brothers, George B. Hopkins on Oct. 17, 1959, and Walter A. Hopkins on Jan. 8, 1934, and by a granddaughter, Tonya M. Steele, on Feb. 25, 1990. Donations in her memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of the funeral home, 535 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
