Lenox - Mary Martha Sorrentino, 69, of West Street died Friday at home.
Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 28, 1938, daughter of John J. and Mary Toolan Shalley, she was a 1955 graduate of Lenox High School, now Lenox Memorial Middle and High School.
Mrs. Sorrentino was employed by Lenox National Bank as a teller from 1976 until retiring in 2004. Before that, she worked for New England Telephone Co. as a telephone operator in Lenox and, later, in Lee for 15 years. In the early 1970s, she was the first woman member of the Lenox Police Department, having been appointed as a special officer by then Chief William A. Romeo. She also was a crossing guard at Morris School for several years.
She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and a longtime member and past treasurer of the Lenox Democratic Town Committee.
She was a strong supporter of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy throughout his career.
Her husband, James F. Sorrentino, whom she married at St. Ann's Church on Oct. 6, 1962, died March 2, 2001.
She leaves a son, James E. Sorrentino of Lenox, and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary Martha Sorrentino, who died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, will be conducted tomorrow at noon at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. at St. Ann's Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tonight from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary Martha's memory may be made to the Lenox Town Scholarship Fund or to the Lenox Youth Basketball Association, both in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St. Lenox, MA 01240.
She also is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Alyssa Marie, Emily Kate and Kailyn JamesSorrentino, and her daughter-in-law, Kim Sorrentino.
