Eugene C. "Gene" Fairfield

Dalton - Eugene C. "Gene" Fairfield, 71, of 111 High St., died Monday at home following a long illness.

Born in Pittsfield, May 30, 1936, son of Clifford and Doris M. Crawford Fairfield, he attended schools in Richmond and was a 1954 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

A veteran of the Army, he served from 1955 until being honorably discharged in 1958.

Mr. Fairfield was employed as a contractor with his son at Fairfield Builders, retiring in November 2006.

Previously, he was the owner/operator of Eugene C. Fairfield Contracting, and was employed at various construction firms, including Arnold Construction and Restorations Inc.

He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting, bow hunting, and the ocean.

He married the former Margaret Higgins on Oct. 25, 1985, in Dalton.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, David Fairfield of Dalton, Christopher Fairfield, currently stationed with the Navy at Port Hueneme, Calif., and Steven Fairfield of Hudson, N.Y.

Also, three brothers, Warren Fairfield of Richmond, Richard Fairfield of Tampa, Fla., and Gordon Fairfield of West Stockbridge.

He also leaves a sister, Pamela Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and three granddaughters.

He was predeceased by another son, Kurt Fairfield in June 1980.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Eugene C. "Gene" Fairfield, 71, who died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2008, will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Robert Kyte officiating. Interment will be private.

Calling hours will precede the funeral on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of the funeral home. In the early 1970s, he was featured in The Berkshire Eagle for building an Indian Tee Pee, which he used to take his sons camping.

He also leaves his granddaughters, Erica, Danielle and Kelsie Fairfield, his daughter-in-law, Ruth Fairfield, and several nieces and nephews.
