Pierce Joseph "Bus" Hayes Jr.

Pierce Joseph "Bus" Hayes Jr., 79, of 85 Central Ave. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on June 7, 1928, son of Pierce J. Hayes Sr. and Catherine Marshall Hayes, he was a 1948 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he was an All-Berkshire guard on the basketball team. He was inducted into the Pittsfield City Basketball Hall of Fame several years ago.

He moved to Dalton 60 years ago.

An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served with the 63rd Regiment in Korea and was wounded in action in 1951. He was discharged in 1952 and awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Hayes was employed by General Electric Co. for 37 years, retiring as a wireman in the power transformer department in 1986. Before that, he was employed by Crane & Co.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a member of the Pittsfield Boys Club Association, the General Electric Athletic Association, the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, the Dalton Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Dalton American Legion. In his younger years, he played baseball and basketball for the Tyler Aces. He enjoyed horse racing and playing golf.

He and his wife, the former Mary M. Hart, were married April 2, 1968.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, John A. Hayes-Jenkins and Shawn J. Hayes Sr., both of Dalton; a daughter, Beverly Jill Taylor of Pittsfield; a sister, Jean Tiska of Kewanee, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Pierce J. Hayes Jr., who died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, will be conducted Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church concelebrated by Mr. Hayes' cousin, the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor of St. Mark's Church in Pittsfield, and by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor of St. Agnes' Church.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club, both in care of the funeral home.

Mr. Hayes is lovingly survived by his five grandchildren, Johnathan and Samantha Jenkins, Jaimie Taylor, Shawn J. Hayes Jr. and Bryanna L. Hayes; and by his daughter-in-law, Shelley Jenkins. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Hayes of Pittsfield.
