Walter Ernest Jones Jr., 83, of 24 Rose Terrace, formerly of 1087 North St., died Sunday at Hillcrest Commons after a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on July 27, 1924, son of Walter E. Jones Sr. and Amiee Heidel Jones, he was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
A World War II Navy veteran, he served three years in the European theater and in England.
Mr. Jones was employed by General Electric Co. as a coil winder on the P.T. machines, retiring in 1985 with 43 years service.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher for many years, and a member of the Mystic Lodge of Masons and Melpha Temple-Shriners. He was a master of Mystic, served on the board of trustees and on the Pittsfield Masonic Association Board for many years and was chairman of many projects, including the lighting and well-being of the temple.
He was a past master of all York Rite Bodies, past high priest of the Berkshire chapter and past district deputy of York Rite. He served in all offices of the Collina chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and was a past worthy patron. He also served as a Boy Scout leader at Pilgrim Memorial Church.
He and his wife, the former Ruth Frances Koenig, were married July 27, 1946, in Pittsfield.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Kenneth A. Jones of Brookfield; two daughters, Sharon R. Omar of Newport, Vt., and Meryl M. Brown of Falmouth; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Walter E. Jones Jr., who died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, will be conducted tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 74 First St., Pittsfield, by the Rev. Dr. Peter Boehringer.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield. A masonic service will take place tomorrow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Jones' memory may be made to the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
