Joan Elizabeth Heaphy

Joan Elizabeth Heaphy, 55, of First Avenue in Troy, N.Y., a Pittsfield native, died Friday at the Village at Laurel Lake in Lee after a three-year battle with progressive supranuclear palsy.

Born June 30, 1952, daughter of William A. and Mary Conry Heaphy, she was a 1970 graduate of St. Joseph's High School and a 1974 cum laude graduate of Russel Sage College in Troy, where she received her bachelor's degree in physical education.

She earned her master's degree in guidance counseling from the State University of New York at Albany in 1976. She was listed in the "Who's Who in American Students" in both high school and college.

Miss Heaphy was employed as a physical education teacher, guidance counselor and girls' athletics coach by the Albany (N.Y.) School District for 30 years. She coached track, basketball and volleyball.

She enjoyed traveling, downhill skiing, attending horse races at Saratoga, reading and entertaining family and friends at her home. She was a fan of both the Red Sox and the New York Yankees.

She leaves two sisters, Mary Jane Pignatelli and Barbara A. Heaphy, both of Lenox; a brother, William A. Heaphy Jr. of Pittsfield; and her companion of many years, George V. McCarg of Troy.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Joan E. Heaphy, who died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be co-celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Church in Lenox by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor, and the Rev. Daniel B. Brunton, pastor emeritus.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.

She also leaves her nieces, Andrea M. and Sarah E. Pignatelli; her nephews, Mark W. Pignatelli, William A. Heaphy III and Daniel J. Pignatelli; and her brother-in-law, Gary F. Pignatelli.
