Gerald George "Jed" Smith

Gerald George "Jed" Smith, 75, of 118 Broadview Terrace died Monday at home after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Kingsbury, London, on May 22, 1932, son of George F. and Nellie Hubbard Smith, he graduated from high school in London.

He served with the British Army Royal Signal Corps from 1950 to 1952, serving 16 months in Egypt.

Mr. Smith was employed by British Railways as a fireman for six years. In 1955, he emigrated to the United States, where he worked as an inspector for local Cadillac and Oldsmobile dealerships for 34 years. He retired from Johnson Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in July 2000 with 10 years of service.

He enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail.

His wife, the former Sheila Diana Donabie, whom he married Sept. 11, 1954, died May 10, 2003.

He leaves a son, Mark H. Smith of Pittsfield; a brother, Douglas W. Smith of Ontario, Canada; and a sister, Gillian Hook of London.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Gerald George "Jed" Smith, who died Monday, Sept. 17, will be private. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Smith may be made to the Marian Fathers, in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

He also leaves his brothers-in-law, Arthur Hook, Bryan Donabie and Donald Crocker; sisters-in-law, Jean Crocker and Pamela Smith; and nieces and nephews, including Jeffrey and Gina Crocker of Pittsfield.
