Joseph Patrick Muraca Jr. 60, of 31 East Grand Ave., Old Orchard Beach, Maine, a former resident of Dalton, died Thursday at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, after a brief illness.
Born in Fall River on Nov. 25, 1946, son of the late Joseph P. Muraca Sr. and Genevieve Harrington Muraca, he was a graduate of Wahconah Regional High School. He received his degree in radiology from the former St. Luke's Hospital School of Radiology as part of a program sponsored by Northeastern University.
He also earned a bachelor's degree in business from the former North Adams State College, now MCLA, and a master's degree in business administration from Anna Maria College in Worcester.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served as a medical corpsman in Southeast Asia.
Mr. Muraca was employed as a radiological technician for many hospitals. He retired earlier this year as director of the radiology department at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine.
He was a former communicant of St. Agnes' Church.
He enjoyed photography and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox.
He and his wife, the former, Madeleine Riello, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary June 29.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Patrick J. Muraca of Pittsfield; a daughter, Kathleen Carty of Charlton; and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Joseph Patrick Muraca Jr., who died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church celebrated by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Muraca may be made to the Jimmy Fund, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton.
Mr. Muraca also leaves his grandchildren, Christopher and Nathan, whom he loved dearly.
