David C. Byrd

David C. Byrd, 58, of 191 South St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.
He was the owner and operator of the former Bonanza Restaurant in Pittsfield.
Born in Walton, N.Y., on July 8, 1949, son of Frederick and Cecile Prine Byrd, he graduated in 1967 from Monrovia Central High School there and received an associate degree in hotel and restaurant management from State University of New York at Canton.
From 1979 to 2001, Mr. Byrd owned and operated the Bonanza Restaurant in Pittsfield, which out sold the national chain's 619 other restaurants nine times during those years. At the time of death, he was employed as an associate salesman for Sysco Food Services of Albany.
He was a member of United Methodist Church of Lenox and a former member of the Dalton Rotary.
He and his wife, the former Deborah Lavelle, were married Oct. 12, 1996.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Tracy Clarke of Geneseo, N.Y., and Jessi Smith of Cape Coral, Fla.; a son, Nicholas Byrd of Fort Myers, Fla.; two stepsons, Ryan LaBonte of Denver and Timothy Crosier of Dalton; two brothers, Frederick Byrd of Groton, N.Y., and Philip Byrd of Oswego, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for David C. Byrd, who died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield, with servces at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield, 55 Fenn St., the Rev. Valerie M. Roberts-Toler officiating. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Deborah Byrd. A fundraiser in David's honor will be hosted by Mazzeo's Ristorante on Sunday, Sept. 23, beginning at 1 p.m. David's zest and pleasure for all the facets of the restaurant business were clearly felt by those he worked with at Sysco. However, Berkshire County residents will remember him best for his warmth and hospitality as owner and operator of Bonanza Restaurant.
His innovative business sense and dynamic leadership enabled the local Bonanza Restaurant to earn top honors nine times during his career with the nationwide chain. Patrons and employees alike will always treasure the special way he touched their lives and made them feel truly appreciated.
He leaves three grandchildren, Skyler, Jacob and Julia Clarke. A brother, Roger Byrd, died in 1998.
