James E. Williams

James E. Williams, 84, of 29 Crystal St. died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Troy, N.Y., on April 29, 1923, son of Samuel and Minnie Bubb Williams, he attended Pittsfield schools.

Mr. Williams was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, enlisting on July 1, 1941. He saw action against in Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Cape Gloucester and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged as a private, first class on Nov. 27, 1945.

He was employed by General Electric Co. as an assembler in the power transformer department, retiring in 1986 with 36 years of service.

He was a life member of the Marine Corps League, where he served as junior vice commandant and a member of its color guard. He was also a member of the First Marine Division of Guadalcanal and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 448, as well as a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs. He enjoyed travel, walking, casinos, horses and fishing.

Mrs. Williams and wife, the former Lorraine A. LaClair, were married April 16, 1960.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Thomas R. Hayes Sr. of Pittsfield; a daughter, Carol A. Lawrence of Pittsfield; a brother, Paul Williams of East Rugby, Vt.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for James Edward Williams, who died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, will be held Friday at 8:15 a.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, celebrated by Monsignor Michael A. Shershanovich, Pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Williams may be made to the Marine Corps League in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.

Mr. Williams also leaves his daughter-in-law, Mary A. Hayes. He was predeceased by a brother, John Williams; a stepbrother, Earl Williams; and a sister, Catherine Hayes.
