Edward D. Sottile Sr.

Edward D. Sottile Sr., 93, of 140 Melbourne Road, died Sunday at Springside of Pittsfield.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 7, 1914, son of Nicola and Rosina Alberti Sottile, he attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from St. Joseph's High School.

He was the stepson of Mary Agnes Galbo Sottile.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and received a bronze medal. He served in the European theater with Company K 3rd Battalion, 175 Regiment, 29th Division, as a rifleman in France and Germany.

Mr. Sottile was employed by General Electric Co. for 39 years, retiring from the former ordnance systems department in 1978.

He was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Holy Name Society.

He was a member of the Sons of Italy Lodge No. 564 and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' Club and a former member of VFW Post 448. He was also a member of the Rainbow Club and the Faccioli Club. He was a member of Charter 99 Stigmatine Fathers' Scholarship Fund. He was a former city councilman of Ward 5.

Mr. Sottile and his wife, the former Bernice M. Weaver, were married Sept. 26, 1942.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Edward D. Sottile Jr. of Pittsfield and Paul M. Sottile of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Sharon A. Mendonsa of Pittsfield; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services with military rites for Edward D. Sottile Sr., who died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, will take place Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Daniel J. O'Hear. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club or the Catholic Youth Center in care of the funeral home. He leaves nine grandchildren, Michelle Ryan (Craig), Marka Mendonsa, Marisa Vanasse (Jack), Marie Myers (Ken), Mark Sottile (Kristin), Shaun Sottile, Tina Bramer (Patrick), Nicole and Michael Sottile; and a daughter-in-law, Joanne Sottile.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony W. Sottile and Mario (Michael) Sottile; and by a sister, Caroline R. Sottile; two nephews, John Sottile and Anthony Sottile.
