Jeremiah J. O'Connell

Jeremiah J. O'Connell, 86, of 49 Unkamet Drive died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.

He spent winters in Dunnellon, Fla.

Born in Manchester, Conn., on April 14, 1921, son of Joseph and Florence Carlson O'Connell, he graduated from schools in Connecticut, including the UniversityofConnecticut, where he received a bachelor's in electrical engineering.

He moved to Pittsfield in 1951.

Mr. O'Connell served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and in the Merchant Marines. He also was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific.

He was employed by General Electric Co. as an electrical engineer for 32 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and a longtime member of the Elfun Society and Berkshire Hills Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf.

He and his wife, the former Beatrice Roy, were married Aug. 16, 1943.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Robert O'Connell of Memphis; a daughter, Beverly Chamberlain of Avon, Conn.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Jeremiah "Jerry" O'Connell died in Pittsfield on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, after bravely fighting against his many serious medical problems. He was a fighter to the end, never complained and died with dignity. He was the loving grandfather of Erin and Jeremy and the beloved great-grandfather of Noah, Margaret, Evelyn and Natalie.

Mr. O'Connell also leaves his son-in-law, James Chamberlain, and his daughter-in-law, Marlyn O'Connell. He and his wife, Bea, were longtime members of Berkshire Hills Country Club. He would often be seen walking the fairways with his golfing buddies on Saturdays and with his wife on Sundays. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at DWYER FUNERAL HOME. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, in his memory.
