James F. "Tex" Goddeau

James F. "Tex" Goddeau, 87, of BerkshireTown Apartments, 176 Columbus Ave., died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield, July 22, 1920, son of Henry O. and Leone A. Potter Goddeau, he was educated in Pittsfield schools.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Goddeau served with the Navy as a seaman first class aboard the USS Enterprise, from May 20, 1942, to Dec. 6, 1945. He received several awards, including the Bronze Star. He later served with the Navy Reserve until January 1954.

He was employed by General Electric Co. as a millwright mechanic for 35 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a communicant of St. Mark Church and a member of the General Electric Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs.

Mr. Goddeau was very active in military organizations. He was a member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448 and a member of its color Guard, and served as with the active honorary color guard at many of the Fourth of July Parades.

He was also a member of the American Legion. He served with the Pittsfield auxiliary police for 15 years. He enjoyed bowling, parades, woodworking, word puzzles and big band music.

Mr. Goodeau leaves his wife, the former Lois H. Keefe, whom he married Nov. 2, 1946.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, James F. Goddeau, Jr. of Pittsfield and Richard P. Goddeau of Foxborough; three daughters, Joanne K. Kickery of Pittsfield, Gail E. Viera of Dalton, and Joyce E. Wasnewsky of Pittsfield; a sister, Geraldine Nimmons of Pittsfield; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for James F. "Tex" Goddeau, who died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m., from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at St. Mark Church, celebrated by the Rev. William Eckert, parochial vicar.

Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Goddeau may be made to Berkshire Medical Center Stroke Unit or to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.

Mr. Goddeau also leaves two daughters-in-law, Debra A. Goddeau and Deborah L. Goddeau; and two sons-in-law, Anthony J. Viera and Mark E. Wasnewsky. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Donald Goddeau; and four sisters, Dorothy Janes, Helen Britigan, Jean Weatherwax and Teresa Goddeau; and a son-in-law, Frederick Kickery.
