Edward J. Kousch

Edward J. Kousch, 92, of Hampden Village, Westfield, died Sunday at home.

He was the father of Deborah K. "Sita" Howard of Pittsfield.

Born in Westfield on June 10, 1915, son of John and Anna Kulakowska Kousch, he was educated in Westfield.

He joined the cavalry, eventually becoming an Army recruiter at Fort Ethal Allen, Vt., and served in World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Kousch received many medals and honors in his overseas duty, including the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and the Sharpshooter Medal. He retired as a master seargent E-7 from Fort Bragg, N.C. in 1960.

After the service, Mr. Kousch was employed by the Strathmore Lodge in Woronoco as manager and chef for 19 years.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for many years, where he supported the Sunday School program and created a flower fund in honor of his wife, the former Frieda Matzke. He enjoyed watching cooking shows on television, playing the lottery, attending Army reunions and the ocean.

He and his wife, who predeceased him, were married 29 years.

Besides his daughter, Mr. Kousch leaves another daughter, Rebecca Breedon of Enfield, Conn.; a sister, Olga Klepach of Hemet, Calif.; and two brothers, Alfred Kousch of Windsor, Conn., and Richard Kousch of Westfield.

A son, Wayne, is deceased.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Edward J. Kousch, who died Sunday, July 29, 2007, will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Wednesday at the FIRTION-ADAMS FUNERAL SERVICE, 76 Broad St., Westfield, from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations in memory of Ed may be made to St. John Sunday School or to the Frieda Kousch Flower Fund care of St. John's Lutheran Church, 60 Broad St., Westfield, MA 01085.

He also leaves a son-in-law, Kenneth Breedon; and a sister-in-law, Gloria Kousch. He was predeceased by his sister, Amelia Ferst, and his brother, Edwin Kousch. His life was enriched by his many friends and neighbors. Special thanks to Chris Ferst, Alma and Eddie Fisher, Bud, Lyman and Diane. Old soldiers never die, they just fade away. Ed was proud to be an American. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent many hours fishing and hunting with his faithful dog, Sarge.
