John Joseph O'Neil Sr.

John Joseph O'Neil Sr., 89, of 43 Bellmore Drive died Sunday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 23, 1918, son of Thomas and Jennie Burns O'Neil, he was a 1935 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

Mr. O'Neil went to work for General Electric Co. in 1936 and joined the Army in 1942,

A veteran of World War II, he served in the battles of New Guinea and the Philippines, for which he was awarded two bronze service stars.

He returned to GE in 1945, retiring in 1980 as a field service representative.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of Berkshire Hills Country Club.

He was active in coaching youth sports at the Boys' Club during the 1960s and ‘70s. For 20 years, he gardened at Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis and poker.

His first wife, the former Alice V. Day, whom he married in 1946, died in 1951.

His wife, the former Esther Melle, whom he married in 1953, died in 1976.

He leaves three sons, Robert M. O'Neil, John J. O'Neil Jr. and Patrick D. O'Neil, all of Pittsfield; a daughter, Rosanna Smith of Dalton; a stepson, Arthur Winters of Pittsfield; a stepdaughter, Sharon Mazza of Pittsfield; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his companion of 30 years, Alberta Quinlan, with whom he resided.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John Joseph "Cold Steel" O'Neil Sr., who died Sunday, July 15, 2007, will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. O'Neil may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club, in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

He leaves 11 grandchildren, Kevin and Michael Hinkley, Melanie Gorton, Ryan and Joseph Smith, and Angela, John III, Christopher, Breanna, Patrick and Harley O'Neil; four great-grandchildren, Craig, Kelsie and Gabrielle Hinkley, and Ryan Gorton. He enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sports events. He was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas, Francis and Joseph O'Neil.
