Francis E. McLaughlin, 91, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Pittsfield, died Thursday at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Memorial Campus, Worcester.
Born in Somerville on Sept., 10, 1915, son of Francis and Rosene O. vonSchoppe McLaughlin, he was raised in Somerville.
Mr. McLaughlin was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific corridor. After serving in World War II, he moved to Pittsfield and two years ago to Shrewsbury.
He was an investigator and hearings officer for the Registry of Motor Vehicles, retiring in 1979 with 32 years of service.
He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed spending time on Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire.
His wife of 50 years, the former L. Esther Anthony, died in 1998.
He leaves a son, Dr. William J. McLaughlin of Boylston; a sister, Emily Leahy of Lexington; and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Francis E. McLaughlin died Thursday, July 5, 2007. Calling hours will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at NORDGREN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester. The funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel in West Boylston.
Burial will be a private family service on Tuesday in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lake Sunapee Protective Association, 72 Main St., Sunapee NH 03782. "Mac" was "Grampy" to all who met him and was famous for his Irish cheer and his wondrous smile.
He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Dr. Anne Seger of Boylston; his grandchildren, Ryan P. McLaughlin of Berlin, Germany, and Meghan J. McLaughlin of Brookline; and several nieces and nephews.
