Maureen Kearns

Maureen Kearns, 65, of Highland Avenue, died Sunday at the home of her sister, Pamela Minardi of Sun Valley Drive in Leola, Pa.

Born in Bennington, Vt., on May 2, 1942, daughter of Rita Sausville Kearns and the late James "Mickey" Kearns, she attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Bennington Catholic High in 1960. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont in 1964 and a master's degree from the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Miss Kearns taught first and second grades at Craneville Elementary School in Dalton for a total of more than 30 years, retiring in 2003. She began her teaching career in Landenberg, Pa., and taught for several years at Cornwell Elementary in Vermont.

She was a communicant of St. Charles' Church and a frequent communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington, where she was a member of the Society of the Ladies of St. Anne.

She was also a longtime member of PEO, a women's professional organization.

Besides her mother, of Bennington, and her sister, she leaves two other sisters, Judy Dudley of New Ringgold, Pa., and Sheila Kearns of Montpelier, Vt.; and two brothers, Kevin Kearns of Westford, Vt., and Colin Kearns of Sarasota, Fla.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Maureen Kearns, who died Sunday, July 1, 2007, will begin with a prayer at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2007, at MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, with a Mass of Resurrection at Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in the family plot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions for Maureen may be made to the Sacred Heart School Library or the Center for Communication in Medicine through the funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

She also leaves 10 nieces and nephews and eight grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
