W.S. Peter Whitestone

W.S. Peter Whitestone, 85, of 239 Main St., died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in New York City on March 13, 1922, son of Walter A. and Beulah Whitestone, he graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York in 1939 and from Rutgers University in 1943, where he was captain of the Scarlet Knights varsity golf and swim teams.

He moved to Dalton 57 years ago.

A veteran of World War II, he served in Germany with the 95th Division as a combat infantryman and attained the rank of first lieutenant.

Mr. Whitestone was a financial adviser for IDS Financial Services for 33 years, retiring in 1988. Previously, he worked at General Electric Co. in Schenectady, N.Y., and spent five years with WBEC in Pittsfield.

He was a communicant of Grace Episcopal Church and served as a vestryman, treasurer, and junior and senior warden.

Mr. Whitestone served on the Finance Committee for several years and was president of the Dalton Community Recreation Association for two years. He was a member of the Dalton American Legion, the Saturday Evening Club and Wahconah Country Club, where he was golf champion in 1953. He continued swimming at the Community House into his 80s. Raised in the shadow of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., he was a Yankees fan.

His wife, the former Jane Stephenson, whom he married July 27, 1946, died Oct. 1, 1994.

He leaves four sons, Robert B. Whitestone of Randolph, N.J., Kenneth S. Whitestone of Dalton, Stephen T. Whitestone of Lake Arrowhead, Calif., and Thomas E. Whitestone of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mr. W.S. Peter Whitestone, who died Monday, June 25, 2007, will be Friday, June 29, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton. Following cremation, burial will take place in Ashuelot Cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be tomorrow, June 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at BARTLETT WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME. Donations in his memory may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or to the Dalton CRA, both in care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.

He also leaves four daughters-in-law, Carolyn, Polly, Patricia and Kim Whitestone; nine grandchildren, Robert and his wife, Kim, and Pamela, Peter, Theresa, Allison, Sarah, Casey, Sammy and Ally; four great-grandchildren, Crystal, Patrick, Justin and Adam; and a longtime friend, Janice Kerk.

He was predeceased by his sister, Betsey Camp.
