Mary Sternberg

Mary Sternberg, 92, of Kimball Farms Apartments, Walker Street, died Saturday at home.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 13, 1914, daughter of Samuel and Fannie Dicker Ornstein, she graduated from Girls' Commercial High School and later attended the University of Massachusetts and Queensboro College in New York.
She was employed as a secretary by the New York City Public School System, retiring in early 1980s.
She moved to the Berkshires in 1986.
Mrs. Sternberg volunteered with the League of Women Voters and for Shakespeare & Company in Lenox. She was also active in a movement for the revival of the Yiddish language.
She and her husband, Leo Sternberg, were married Jan. 23, 1937, in New York City. He died Feb. 10, 1998.
Mrs. Sternberg leaves a daughter, Amy Sternberg Mann of Port Washington, N.Y. and Great Barrington; a son, Daniel Sternberg of Manhattan; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary Sternberg, who died Saturday, June 17, 2007, will be conduted Friday at 1 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by Rabbi Deborah Zecher, spiritual leader of Hevreh of Southern Berkshire.
Burial will follow in Ahavath Shalom Cemetery in Great Barrington. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the League of Women Voters through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Mrs. Sternberg also leaves a son-in-law, Jeffrey and a daughter-in-law, Deborah. She was a deeply devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was loved by people of all ages.
