John Edward Farrell

John Edward Farrell, 75, of 556 Main St., died yesterday at his home.
Born in Pittsfield, Sept. 23, 1931, son of Frederick J. and Marguerite Clark Farrell, he was a 1949 graduate of the former Dalton High School.
He served in the Army during the Korean War, building and maintaining military airstrips from January 1951 through February 1953, when he was discharged with the rank of sergeant.
He worked for his family-owned business, Farrell & Gregory, Inc., a steel erection, rigging and crane service business in Pittsfield, where he began as secretary-bookkeeper and worked his way up to president. The business closed in 1980 after 56 years. He also was involved in a partnership company, Berkshire Bridge & Iron Co., from 1963 to 1968.
In January 1981, Mr. Farrell went to work as construction salesman of Dominion Bridge-Sulzer Construction, based in Lachine, Canada, and later was appointed general manager of a new subsidiary for the purpose of construction service.
In 1982, he ran unsuccessfully for the 2nd District House of Representatives seat held by former Rep. Thomas R. Lussier.
Mr. Farrell served as chairman of the Dalton Sanitary Landfill Committee and was a member of the Industrial Development Finance Authority and the Finance Committee. He also served on the board of directors of the Pittsfield Co-operative Bank for more than 30 years until his retirement in 2006. He was a member of the American Legion Post 155 and was a member of the VFW Post No. 9566, where he served as district commander and held several other posts.
He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church.
A member of the Wahconah Country Club, he enjoyed playing golf and softball, and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
Mr. Farrell leaves his wife, the former Carol Ann Morrison, whom he married Aug. 1, 1953.
Besides his wife, he is survived by seven sons, John E. Farrell Jr., of Gulfport, Miss., James M. Farrell of Pownal, Vt., Joseph K. Farrell of Orlando, Fla., Jeffrey B. Farrell and Matthew T. Farrell, both of Dalton, Mark F. Farrell of Peru, and Peter J. Farrell of Lenox; three daughters, Susan E. Farrell Haddad of Pittsfield, Aline M. Ferris of Windsor, and Ann M. Farrell of Dalton; two brothers, Michael Farrell of Pittsfield and Robert Farrell of Port St. Lucie, Fla; a sister, Betty Adams of Pittsfield; 21 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John E. Farrell, who died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes' Church, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Farrell may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to St. Agnes' School, both in care of the funeral home, 890 Main. St., Dalton.
Mr. Farrell leaves his grandchildren, Christopher Farrell, Patrick Farrell, Marissa Farrell, Brad Farrell, Sean Farrell, Ryan Farrell, Jason Farrell, Jackie Farrell, Jenaye Haddad, Dan Haddad, Derrick Haddad, Kayla Farrell, Meghan Farrell, Courtney Ferris, John "O" Ferris, Andrea Ferris, Jamy Ferris, Katey Farrell, Kyle Farrell, Carley Farrell and Shaina Farrell; and great-grandchildren, Douglas LaDoucer, Alexis LaDoucer and Christopher Farrell Jr., as well as his in-laws, Minnie Farrell, Mary Farrell, Sue Farrell, Theresa Farrell, Linda Farrell, John Ferris and Paul Haddad.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Juny Farrell and Christopher Farrell; and two sisters, Marylouise Farrell and Kathleen Temble. Mr. Farrell appreciated the friendships he formed with his caregivers, Russ and Devan Moran, Valerie, Tami, Marianne, Arlene and Theresa. The care he received through HospiceCare in the Berkshires gave him great comfort and his family incredible support.
