John O. Tucker Sr.

John O. Tucker Sr., 87, formerly of 173 King St., died Saturday at Springside of Pittsfield nursing facility.
Born in Pittsfield on March 17, 1920, son of Charles J. and Isabel Hamilton Tucker, he attended schools here and at Craneville in Dalton before moving to Boston.
He worked for the former Civilian Conservation Corps throughout New England before being assigned to Oregon in 1936. He then was assigned to Alaska, where he participated in building the railroad around Mount McKinley. After that, he was a staff car driver and worked in Boise, Idaho, for a short time.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a motor pool truck driver.
Following his discharge, Mr. Tucker drove for several trucking companies and was employed as a laborer.
He was a former member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
He served as past commander, vice commander and sergeant-at-arms at Charles Persip Post 68 American, where he was a 50-year member. He was a former coach of the Post 68 baseball teamand a fan of the Boston Red Sox.
His wife, the former Genevieve R. Gardner, whom he married Aug. 30, 1941, died Feb. 20, 1995.
He leaves a son, John O. Tucker Jr. of Pittsfield; four daughters, Dorothy A. Cary of Dalton, Christine E. Tucker of Altamont, N.Y., and Isabel F. Fassell and Susan E. Tucker, both of Lee; a sister, Isabel Tucker of Scarsdale, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Another son, Charles J. "Jeff" Tucker, died in December 1978.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private services for John O. Tucker Sr., who died Saturday, April 21, 2007, were conducted at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesborough.
There were no calling hours. Burial followed in Pittsfield Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund, in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
