Warren Alger Drew

Warren Alger Drew, 88, of 934 Main St., died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center following a short illness.
Born in Barnston in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada, on Oct. 11, 1918, son of Harvey H. and Amelia May Pope Drew, he attended school through eighth grade, then became a farmer.
Mr. Drew served a term on the Barnston Town Council and worked for a provincial fish hatchery there. He operated a machine for Butterfield's tool and die shop in Derby Line, Vt., before taking a job with the Coleman Estate at Little Diamond Pond in Stewartstown, N.H. He worked briefly at a casket factory in Littleton, N.H., before becoming a houseman at the Arthur D. and Helen G. Budd estate in Windsor in 1952.
In 1965, Arthur Budd bequeathed the 3,000-acre property to the Trustees of Reservations. Mr. Drew then became superintendent of Notchview Reservation, with responsibilities to the Bryant Homestead in Cummington, Chesterfield Gorge and others. At Notchview, he created new hiking and cross-country skiing trails. Following his retirement in 1983, he moved to Dalton.
He was active in the Windsor Congregational Church, where he was, at one time, a deacon and a member of the executive committee. He enjoyed the outdoors, vegetable gardening, cross-country skiing and woodworking.
Mr. Drew and his wife, the former Jennie R. Rose, were married in Barnston on Nov. 27, 1948. The Drews became naturalized American citizens in 1955.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Bernard A. Drew of Great Barrington; two daughters, Marlene Drew of Great Barrington and Rose Wilson of Pittsfield; a sister, Gertrude Bowen of Ontario; a brother, Merwyn Drew of Quebec; and four granddaughters.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Warren Alger Drew, who died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, will be conducted tomorrow at 1 p.m. at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226, by the Rev. Levi Davenport, pastor of the Windsor Congregational Church. Calling hours will be from noon until the time of service.
Burial will follow at the Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Drew's memory to the Windsor Congregational Church or the Dalton Volunteer Ambulance Squad. Mr. Drew also leaves his daughter-in-law, Donna M. Drew, and son-in-law, Peter Wilson; four granddaughters, Jessie and Darcie Drew and Amanda and Jennie Wilson; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Marjorie, Elsie, Eleanor, and Eunice; his twin brothers, Wilbur and Willis Drew, and two brothers who died in infancy, Randall and Arthur. The family appreciates the care and support of Dr. John Burnham, the Berkshire Medical staff and HospiceCare in the Berkshires.
