Doris D. Bates

Doris D. Bates, 98, died April 18 at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton, Conn.

She was a former longtime Pittsfield resident.

Born in Chatham, N.Y., on Jan. 26, 1909, daughter of Charles M. and Minnie Miller Dunham, she was a 1926 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mrs. Bates was employed by Berkshire Life Insurance Co. for many years.

She was a longtime member of the South Congregational Church, a 56-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter L, the Daughters of the American Revolution Peace Party Chapter and the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Her husband, Sherrill P. Bates, whom she married May 9, 1936, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, is deceased.

She leaves two daughters, Lois Walnut of DeWitt, N.Y., and Ann Wohlleber of North Stonington, Conn.; and a son, Stephen D. Bates of LeMars, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private burial service for Doris D. Bates, who died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, will be held at a later date. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by a son-in-law, Robert Wohlleber, a grandson, Joshua Bates, and her sisters, Ruth Nesbit and Cornelia Plouffe.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church World Service, 282 Main St., Middletown, CT 06457 or P.E.O. Sisterhood, C/O Pamela Kie-Viner, 69 Giles Rd, Stephentown, NY 12168. The WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201 is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bates also leaves a son-in-law, Tom Walnut; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Bates; three nephews; and a niece.
