Alba M. Whitney

Alba M. Whitney, 96, a longtime Pittsfield resident, died Saturday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility, where she had resided since March 15.

Born in Northfield, Vt., on Sept. 2, 1910, daughter of Antonio and Josephine Luchetti Daneluzzi, she was educated in Vermont and graduated from Northfield High School in 1930.

In 1932, she graduated from the University of Vermont, where she received her teaching certificate. In 1960, she graduated from the former North Adams State College, now the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where she received her bachelor's degree in education.

Her first teaching assignment was a one-room schoolhouse in Vermont, where she taught grades 1 through 8.

After her marriage, she moved to Pittsfield, where she owned and operated the former Sugar Bowl Restaurant on North Street for several years during the 1950s. After that she returned to teaching, primarily in the Pittsfield Public School System. She had taught at Allendale, Pontoosuc and Pomeroy Schools, retiring in 1975.

Mrs. Whitney was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and belonged to the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

She also was the president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Retired Officers Association for two years. She was also a former member of the ITAM Lodge. She enjoyed interior decorating, gardening, needlework and traveling.

She and her husband, James F. Whitney, were married April 13, 1940, in Northfield, Vt.

Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Jorene Whitney of Akron, Ohio and Lisa Whitney of New York City; two grandchildren; and two great granddaughters.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Alba M. Whitney, who died Saturday, April 14, 2007, will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the DERY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Church, celebrated by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Whitney also leaves her two grandchildren, Bridget Lazlo and Gregory La Plant, and her two great-granddaughters, Emily and Allison Lazlo. She was predeceased by her sisters, Antoinette and Augusta, and by her brother, Libero.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to St. Mark's Church, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Most of all, Mrs. Whitney enjoyed her family.

I loved this teacher. I had her for 5th grade at Pomeroy school. She was very stern, but also very fair. I used to go to her house after school to do some housekeeping for her. I have thought of her many times over the years. A good person and a great teacher. She made a lasting impact on my education
