Raymond F. Kirby

Raymond F. Kirby, 89, of Walker Street, died Tuesday afternoon at Providence Care Center of Lenox.
A native of Lenox, he was born Nov. 5, 1917, the son of Robert and Mary Gorman Kirby. He attended Lenox schools and later took courses that qualified him as a certified arborist.
A decorated veteran of World War II, Mr. Kirby served in the 104th Infantry Co. H and was wounded in action in France on Dec. 5, 1944. He received several commendations including the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged Oct. 25, 1945.
He was employed for 30 years by the Massachusetts Department of Public Works in Berkshire County as a tree surgeon and later as a bridge inspector, retiring in 1974. Prior to his induction into the Army, he had worked for J.H. Flynn Tree Surgeons for several years.
Mr. Kirby was a lifelong communicant of St. Ann's Church in Lenox. He was a sportsman and enjoyed flower gardening, making maple syrup, and walking his dogs.
His wife, the former Shirley Pease, whom he married in November 1948, died Mother's Day, 1970.
He leaves a son, Raymond F. Kirby Jr. of Lenox; a brother, William E. "Spud" Kirby of Dalton; and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private funeral service for Raymond F. Kirby, who died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, will be conducted Friday at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor of St. Ann's Church.
Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
Mr. Kirby is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Meredith "Mimi" Kirby and Eric Kirby; his daughter-in-law, Diana C. Kirby, and his sister-in-law, Lorraine Pease.
