Shirley Kaplan, 82, of Rolling Hills Condominiums in Lenox and 95 West 95th St., New York City died Friday at her home in Manhattan, where she was receiving Hospice care.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 1, 1925, daughter of Pinya and Tanya Weitz Pearlmutter, she attended local schools and went on to attend the City University of New York.
Mrs. Kaplan was employed as a housing specialist by Urban Home Ownership Corp. in New York City, a position that she had held for more than 30 years.
She attended many peace marches and rallies.
She was also member of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Mrs. Kaplan and her husband, the late Milton Kaplan, were married Nov. 9, 1946. He died Sept. 23, 1986.
She leaves her daughter, Jean Friedman of Teaneck, N.J., and Lenox; two sons, Dr. Michael Kaplan of Lenox and Robert Kaplan of New York City; and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Shirley Kaplan died on Friday, March 16, 2007. Donations in her name can be made to Fountain House, a service, advocacy and residential program for people living with mental illness, at 425 West 47th St., New York, NY 10036. A funeral was held on March 19 at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan by Rabbi Peter Schweitzer.
Her son, daughter-in-law and grandson will be receiving visitors in their home at 36 Under Mountain Road in Lenox on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. She also leaves four grandchildren, Daniel Friedman of Los Angeles, Tanya Friedman of Teaneck, N.J., Hannah Kaplan of Oberlin, Ohio, and Luke Kaplan of Lenox; a daughter-in-law, Alyce Kaplan of Lenox; and a son-in-law, Paul Friedman of Teaneck and Lenox.
She also leaves a large group of friends with whom she spent decades enjoying travel, cultural events, family and political activism. Mrs. Kaplan led a life that was dedicated to peace and justice and instilled in her children and grandchildren the need to be politically active and to advocate for those less fortunate. With children in tow and later as a senior citizen, she could be spotted at peace marches and rallies.
