James K. Chapman Sr.

February 16, 2007

James K. Chapman Sr., 89, of 149 Osceola Road, died Friday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox following a long illness.

Born in Newberry, S.C., on July 22, 1917, son of Francis W. and Elizabeth Kibler Chapman, he graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. Subsequently, he served as a graduate instructor at Clemson before moving to the University of Michigan, where he received his master of science degree in electrical engineering.

Mr. Chapman was employed as a real estate broker. He also served as Pittsfield's tax assessor, and upon moving to Richmond in 1980, he became the tax assessor for that town. He retired in 2000. Previously, he was employed by General Electric Co. in Pittsfield. He began work with them in July 1942 as an engineer in the power systems group. Later he was transferred to Syracuse, where he spent the next 17 years, ultimately heading GE's ordinance division. He retired from GE with 38 years of service.

Mr. Chapman enjoyed golfing, averaging over 100 rounds per year as a member of the Country Club of Pittsfield.

He and his wife, the former Lois Buckheit, were married Jan. 26, 1941. She died in August 1974.

He leaves two sons, Alan H. Chapman of Amherst and James K. Chapman Jr. of Richmond; and five grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private graveside service for James Chapman, who died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, will be held in the Pittsfield Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Leukemia Society in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Chapman also leaves his pride and joy, his five grandchildren, Erica of Loveland, Ohio, Blythe of Redstone, Colo., Gavin of Denver, Colo., Alyssa of Princeton, N.J., and Cassie of San Francisco. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at the Pittsfield Country Club in the spring at a time and date to be announced.

Mr. Chapman's passion for more than 76 seasons was golf, and he created his own legend as the iron man of the links. Attending the Masters in Georgia each spring, he was a student of the game, even providing his own patented putter to Golf Technology. The Country Club of Pittsfield was a special place for him, a home away from home.
