Edgar Fuller Sewell

Edgar Fuller Sewell, 88, of 110 East St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born June 29, 1918, in Medford, son of Thomas E. and Myrtie Fuller Sewell, he graduated Boston Latin High School, and, in 1940, from the University of Maine with a bachelor's degree in chemistry.

Mr. Sewell worked as an organic chemist at MIT in radar development. He also worked with American Brake Shoe Co. and Kimberly Clark Corp., and retired from General Electric in 1973 from the Ordnance Manufacturing Division.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Pittsfield, where he sang in the choir.

Mr. Sewell was a member of the Pittsfield Crescent Lodge of Masons, where he was past master. He was treasurer for 17 years, secretary for many years and, most recently, marshal. He was a member of the Berkshire Power Squadron, and he enjoyed sailing. He also was a past vice president of Kiwanis Club of Stockbridge-West Stockbridge.

He leaves his wife, the former Beatrice Hazard, whom he married Feb. 13, 1971.

He also leaves a son, Edgar F. Sewell Jr. of Trumbull, Conn.; two daughters, Christine Sewell Stillson of Wyoming, Del., and Constance Sewell Testa of North Easton; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A sister, Virginia I. Reimels, and a grandson, Jeffrey C. Sewell, predeceased him.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Edgar F. Sewell, who died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at First Baptist Church of Pittsfield, the Rev. Robert M. Rennie officiating. Burial is private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Pittsfield or to the Shriner's Hospital in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Mr. Sewell was an avid golfing member of Wahconah Country Club, where he played with his son and grandsons, and as a member of the Dilly Boys. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and doing crossword puzzles. Mr. Sewell had a bright and active mind. When he received his first computer for his 80th birthday, he openly embraced the technology and became very proficient in its use.

He also leaves a sister-in-law, Grace L. Hazard; grandchildren, Daniel Stillson, Sara Cameli, Michael Sewell, Mark Sewell, Matthew Sewell, Martin Sewell, Jennifer Sewell, Allison McHugh and Stephanie Domings; great-grandchildren, Henry Sewell, John Sewell, Charles Sewell, Trent Sewell, Maxwell Sewell, Caroline Sewell, Ryan Sewell, Alexander Stillson, Benjamin Stillson, William Stillson, Enzo Cameli, Lilly Cameli and Tyler Domings.
