Dr. Francis A. Slowick Sr.

Dr. Francis A. Slowick Sr., 105, of 22 Central Ave. died yesterday at home.

Before moving to Dalton, he lived at Sugar Mill Wood in Homosassa, Fla., from 1978 to 1995. He lived in Lenox from 1963 to 1972 and in Pittsfield from 1972 to 1978.

Born in the former town of Greenwich on Jan 19, 1901, son of Joseph and Caroline Slowick, he was a 1919 graduate of Palmer High School. In 1928, he earned his medical degree in orthopedic surgery from Tufts Medical School and did his residency at Boston City Hospital.

Dr. Slowick maintained his practice in Pittsfield from 1934 to 1978. His office was on North Street prior to the 1940s, after which he moved to First Street.

He enjoyed surgical privileges at the former St. Luke's, Pittsfield General and Hillcrest hospitals, and at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a past member of the Massachusetts and American medical associations.

Dr. Slowick published a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine on the early stages of septic hips.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a former member of the Pittsfield and Wahconah country clubs. He enjoyed art, reading, music and playing golf.

His first wife, the former Olive E. O'Brien, whom he married in 1934, died in 1960.

His wife, the former Claire Morrison, whom he married April 4, 1964, died April 27, 2000.

He leaves a son, Brian A. Slowick of Mango, Fla.; a daughter, Paula A. Francese of Exeter, N.H.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Another son, Dr. Frank A. Slowick Jr. of Richmond, died Oct. 19, 2005.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Dr. Frank A. Slowick Sr., who died Monday, Oct. 23, will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 10 at St. Agnes' Church in Dalton by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Slowick may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to St. Agnes' Church, both in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. Dr. Slowick was predeceased by four brothers and six sisters.

He leaves many nieces and nephews and his caregivers.
