Eleanor Morse

Eleanor Morse, 86, of Kimball Farms died Saturday at its nursing center.

Born in Boston on Feb. 25, 1920, daughter of John Clark and Katherine Atkinson Rice, she was the last surviving relative of Alexander Hamilton Rice, governor of Massachusetts from 1876 to 1878.

She grew up in Dedham and graduated from St. Timothy's School in Catonsville, Md. She attended La Petite École Florentine in Italy and studied interior design in New York.

During World War II, she trained and served as a Red Cross nurse's aide in Army hospitals stateside and was a Red Cross staff assistant in the Philippines, in Japan and at the River Club in New York.

She traveled throughout the world and was among the first Americans to visit Russia when visas became available in 1956. She was a member of the Lenox Club, the Mahkeenac Boat Club in Stockbridge, the Chilton Club in Boston and the River Club in New York.

Her husband, Gardner Sutherland Morse, whom she married in 1950, died in 1977. He was a former president of the former Berkshire County Savings Bank.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Eleanor Rice Morse, who died Oct. 21, 2006, will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in her memory to the Berkshire Museum, to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Lee Regional VNA, all in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.

She leaves a nephew by marriage, Nicholas MacShane of Wellesley, and her friends and primary caregivers, Robert and Claudia Wells of Lenox. Her great-grandfather, Alexander Hamilton Rice, was also mayor of Boston from 1856 to 1857 and a U.S. representatative from 1859 to 1867.
