Rabbi Howard R. Greenstein

Rabbi Howard R. Greenstein, 71, of 4-10 Rolling Hills and 8570 Pepper Tree Way, Naples, Fla., died yesterday at his Lenox home of lymphoma.

Born in Providence, R.I., son of Charles and Olga Greenstein, he was a 1953 graduate of Classical High School and a 1957 graduate of Cornell University.

He was ordained a rabbi in 1962 from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and was the first person to receive his Ph.D. in Jewish studies from Ohio State University.

Rabbi Greenstein served congregations in Massachusetts, Ohio and Florida and was the spiritual leader of the Jewish congregation of Marco Island, Fla. He also was a member of the faculty at the University of Florida and at Florida Gulf Coast University.

He was a member of Temple Anshe Amunim in Pittsfield. He published numerous articles and three books, "Judaism: An Eternal Covenant," "Turning Point: Zionism and Reform Judaism" and "What My Neighbors Believe- A Guide Book to Christianity and Islam." He also was an opera singer.

He and his wife, the former Lenore Brotman, celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary Sept. 8. They were married in New York.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Lisa Mitts of Tiberias, Israel, and Karen Weiner of Lenox; a son, Rabbi Micah Greenstein of Memphis, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral and interment for Rabbi Howard R. Greenstein, 71, who died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, will be today at 3 at Pittsfield Cemetery, Temple Anshe Amunim section, with Rabbi Harold Salzmann, rabbi emeritus of Temple Anshe Amunim, officiating.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Naples, Fla. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice, in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. His crown jewels were his nine grandchildren, Joshua, Rachel, Jonathan, Rebecca, Maximillian, Samson, Cara, Jake and Julia.

He also is survived by his sons-in-law, David Mitts and Marc Weiner, and by his daughter-in-law, Sheril Greenstein.
