Mary Virginia "Ginny" Ramsay, 85, of Camelot Drive, Nokomis, Fla., a former longtime resident of Lenox, died Wednesday at Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota, Fla..
Born in Frankfort, Ky., on Sept. 4, 1921, daughter of William H. and Mary Manning Cook, she moved to Fredonia, N.Y., as a child and was a 1939 graduate of Fredonia High School. She received her bachelor of education degree from Fredonia State College in 1943.
Mrs. Ramsay taught at Lenox Elementary School, retiring in 1978. She started her career as a third-grade teacher at the U.S. Army School in Vienna, Austria.
She was a member of the Church on the Hill and taught in its Christian Education program.
She was a member of the Berkshire Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, the Hoffmann Bird Club and the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and a former Girl Scout Leader. She also volunteered as a demonstrator at the Mother/Child Program in Pittsfield, as a docent at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and as a guide at Tanglewood.
Her husband, Walter H. Ramsay Jr., whom she married in Pittsfield on May 27, 1950, died Sept. 19, 1996.
She leaves a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Jones of Nokomis, and two grandsons.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Mary Virginia "Ginny" Ramsay, who died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at 3 at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox by the Rev. Natalie Childs Shiras, pastor of the Church on the Hill, and the Rev. David F. Hurst, pastor of Grace Union Church in Wilbraham.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Hoffmann Bird Club Scholarship Fund, the Venice Audubon Society or The Rookery, all in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
Mrs. Ramsay also leaves her beloved grandchildren, Thomas Evan Jones and Tyler Ramsay Jones. She was predeceased by her brothers, James M. and William H. Cook.
