Leo "Joe" Rivers

Leo "Joe" Rivers, 69, of Route 16A, Intervale, N.H., formerly of Dalton, died Saturday, Aug. 12, at his home.

Born in Dalton on Sept. 2, 1936, son of Leo and Helen Lee Rivers, he received his bachelor's degree from Providence College in 1959 and received his master's degree from Rhode Island College.

He moved to Mount Washington Valley in 1979.

Mr. Rivers was employed by Bartlett School in the town of Bartlett for 14 years as principal. He was also employed as the golf columnist for the Mountain Ear Newspaper.

He and his wife, the former Evelyn Sullivan, were married for 43 years.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Peter Rivers of Bethlehem, N.H., Jonathan Rivers of Glen, N.H.; a daughter, Julie Rivers of Intervale, N.H.; three brothers, James Rivers of Dalton, Richard Rivers of Pittsfield and Robert Rivers of Ashland; and seven grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated today for Leo "Joe" Rivers, who died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, in North Conway, N.H. Burial was to be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Bartlett, N.H. The family is setting up a journalist and golf scholarship in lieu of flowers.

Donations may be made to the Joseph Rivers Scholarship Fund, care of Indian Mound Golf Course, Ossipee, N.H. 03864. Arrangements in care of FURBER & WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 2925 White Mountain Highway, P.O. Box 498 North Conway, NH 03860.

He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Maureen and Jacklyn, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
