Gene R. Peterson

Gene R. Peterson, 87, of Kimball Farms died Thursday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Syracuse, N.Y., on July 30, 1918, son of Glenn and Bertha Blinzinger Peterson, he was a graduate of Clarkson University, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering.
He served as an ensign in the Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He continued his commission in the Reserve and at one time held the distinction of being the oldest ensign in the Navy until he was promoted in 1953.
In 1960, Mr. Peterson moved from Syracuse to Pittsfield, where he was employed by General Electric Co. as general manager of Naval Ordnance. He retired in 1983.
He served on the board of directors for the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club, was a former director of Hillcrest Hospital, and was a member of the Rotary Club and the Country Club of Pittsfield.
His wife, the former Jean Mills Bossa, whom he married April 4, 1942, died March 25.
He leaves four sons, Gene R. Peterson II of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Kim Peterson of Atlanta, Dirk Peterson of West Newbury and Tod Peterson of Pittsfield; a daughter, Jill Peterson of Dalton; a brother, Vern Peterson of Georgia; a sister, June Hill of Nebraska; two granddaughters, and a great-granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Gene R. Peterson, who died Thursday, July 20, 2006, also leaves two granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah, and a great-granddaughter, Jordan Haley.
A memorial gathering will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
