Joseph G. Larrivee

Joseph G. Larrivee, 81, of 8 Elm St. died Saturday at his home.

Born in Housatonic on Oct. 30, 1924, son of the late Ulric Larrivee and Rosanna Mercier Larrivee, he was a 1942 graduate of Lee High School.

A World War II Veteran, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served with the Eighth Air Force in the 92D Bombardment Group in England until his honorable discharge as a staff sergeant in 1946.

A longtime resident of Lenox Dale, he was employed by Mead Corporation of Lee as a machinist for over 30 years, retiring in 1987. Prior to that he worked at General Electric for 10 years.

Mr. Larrivee was a lifelong communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lenox Dale.

He grew up at the base of October Mountain and spent his youth hunting, trapping and exploring with his brothers on the mountain. He enjoyed playing music, especially the piano and accordion, playing in a few local area bands when he was young, and also called square dances during his Army years. In addition, he enjoyed drawing, storytelling, inventing and spending time with family and friends.

He leaves his wife, the former Therese Marie Hains, whom he married on Aug. 21, 1949, in Notre Dame des Bois, Quebec, Canada. They would have celebrated their 57th anniversary this August.

Besides his wife, he leaves five sons, Denis C. Larrivee of Williamston, S.C., Raymond L. Larrivee of Brummen, Netherlands, Marc P. Larrivee of Lee, Robert M. Larrivee of Uxbridge and John D. Larrivee of Emmetsburg, Md.; three daughters, Diane M. Steele of Richmond, Helen L. Larrivee of Goppingen, Germany, and Christine A. Cooney of Lenox; two brothers, Maurice Larrivee of Lee and Adrien Larrivee of Delmar, N.Y., and 15 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private funeral services for Joseph G. Larrivee, who died Saturday, July 15, 2006, will be Wednesday, July 19, at 9 a.m. from ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul's Church, Lenox Dale, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Waitekus, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery, Lenox. There will be no calling hours. He was predeceased by a sister, Matilda Thibedeau.

He also leaves five daughters-in-law, Rita Larrivee, Antonia Larrivee, Wanda Larrivee, Joann Larrivee and Katherine Larrivee; two sons-in-law, Mathew Steele and Michael Cooney, and 15 grandchildren, Angeline and Charles Larrivee, Jeroen, Linde and Gwendolyn Larrivee, John Steele, Rebecca, Katherine, Daniel and Jacqueline Larrivee, Michael, Mary and Joseph Larrivee, and Isabelle and Jack Cooney.

In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires or St. Ann's Parish Family Center in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
