Florence Isabel Macdonald, 95, died Sunday at Kimball Farms, where she had resided since 1993.
Born in Boston on July 17, 1910, daughter of John A. and Jean Ferguson Macdonald, she grew up in Melrose and attended schools there.
She was a 1932 graduate of Smith College, where she majored in English and served as secretary of her class.
Miss Macdonald was employed for several years as secretary to the headmaster of Mount Hermon School in Northfield. In 1948, she became secretary to the dean of faculty at Smith College. She subsequently became secretary to the president of Smith and to the board of trustees.
She served under three presidents, retiring in 1976, and was awarded an honorary master of arts degree. A mace, which is carried in all Smith College commencements, was created in her name.
Following her retirement, she traveled with Smith College alumnae groups to China, New Zealand, Spain, Scotland, the Canadian Maritimes and to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
She was a member of First Churches in Northampton.
At Kimball Farms, she served many years on the Library Committee and was a member of the Residents Committee and chairwoman of the Committee on Committees.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- There will be no services for Florence Isabel Macdonald. Her cremains will be interred at Nanton Cemetery in Nanton, British Columbia, Canada, next to those of her parents. A Memorial Service will be held in the fall at Smith College.
