John W. Roy

John W. Roy, M.D., of Ellicott City, Md., formerly of Lenox, died at home on Saturday.

Born in Pittsfield on May 1, 1920, son of Augustus and Celia McGee Roy, he attended Lenox schools and was a 1938 graduate of Lenox High School.

He received a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1943 and his medical degree from Albany Medical School in 1946.

Dr. Roy was a Navy medical officer from 1946 to 1949, and traveled the Mediterranean during his service. He completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City from 1949 to 1952, and was a practicing physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology in the New York/New Jersey area between 1953 and 1986.

He and his wife, the former Susan Francis Davis, were married in 1950. She died two years ago.

Dr. Roy leaves two daughters, Alison Roy-Harrison of Ellicott City and Ann Winston Roy of Easthampton; a sister, Margie Templeton of Redlands, Calif.; two brothers, Edward Roy of Northfield, Minn., and Augustus Roy of Lenox, and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Dr. John W. Roy, who died Saturday, June 3, 2006, was conducted June 18 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Williamsburg, Va. Donations in his memory may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3051 Iron Bound Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

Dr. Roy also leaves his beloved grandchildren, Jessica Roy-Harrison of Charlottesville, Va., Nicole Roy-Harrison of Ellicott City, Md., and William Roy-Harrison of Ellicott City, and his sons-in-law, William Roy-Harrison and Thomas Uzar.

His old-fashioned humanitarian bedside manners and compassion brought several generations of mothers and daughters into his care over a 30-year span. He and his late wife, Susan Francis Roy, had a grand love affair which lasted 55 years.
