Louise W. Spencer

Louise W. Spencer, 90, of Kimball Farms died Saturday at its nursing care center.
She had been a resident of Kimball Farms since 1996.
Born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on July 18, 1915, daughter of Robert John Busby Wright and Ethel Matilda Schwartz Wright, she was a 1933 graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and graduated from the former New Paltz State Normal School with a degree in elementary education in 1936.
After teaching in various New York communities, Mrs. Spencer came to Pittsfield in 1938 and taught kindergarten and second grade at the former Dawes School.
She served as a nurse's aide for the Red Cross during World War II. In 1948, she was awarded a master's degree in education by the former North Adams State Teachers College. She retired from teaching when she married J. Haines Spencer on Feb. 21, 1953. He died in 1991.
Mrs. Spencer was active in Junior League and the Berkshire Medical Center Auxiliary. For many years, she organized the sale of fabric donated by Arnold Print Works in Adams to benefit the auxiliary.
She was a long-standing member of First Church of Christ Congregational in Pittsfield and was a member of The Country Club of Pittsfield for more than 50 years.
A seamstress, Mrs. Spencer, along with artist and close friend Maresi Soyka, established Lousi Originals, a business making dresses using hand-printed fabrics of their own design.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting and needlepoint. She especially loved music and dancing.
She leaves a son, Jack Spencer of Stockbridge; two daughters, Judy Burbank of Pittsfield and Cyndie Spencer of Madison, Wis.; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Louise Wright Spencer died Saturday, June 17, 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Berkshire Fund for Excellence c/o Berkshire Taconic Foundation, Great Barrington.
Friends and family will gather at a luncheon in July in her memory. She also leaves a daughter-in-law, Judy Spencer of Stockbridge, and a son-in-law, Denny Lund of Madison, Wis.
