Caroline LeVardi Camerlengo

Caroline LeVardi Camerlengo, 82, of 109 Quail Lane, Pelzer, S.C., formerly of 824 West Housatonic Street, died June 15 at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora after becoming ill while en route from visiting her daughter in California.

She had lived in Pelzer, S.C., for the past two years, prior to which she had lived in Edison, N.J. for five years.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 4, 1923, daughter of Pasquale and Anna Renne LeVardi, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mrs. Camerlengo was a homemaker for many years. In her 40s, after raising her children, she returned to school, taking classes at Berkshire Community College, and graduated from nursing school in Holyoke. She then was employed by Berkshire Medical Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse, retiring in the late 1970s.

She was predeceased by her former husbands, John Camerlengo and Elliot Calkins.

She leaves two daughters, Janet Calkins of Edison, N.J., and Bonnie Haggerty of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two sons, Craig Calkins of Baton Rouge, La., and Wayne Calkins of Pelzer, S.C.; a sister, Rose LeVardi of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Caroline Camerlengo, the youngest daughter of the large Italian LeVardi family of the Berkshires, who died Thursday, June 15, 2006, who is remembered as one never to be bothered by the shackles of age, will be held Friday, June 23, at 11:30 a.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Camerlengo also leaves her children's spouses, Laurie Brown, Barbara Alexander, John Haggerty, and Ms. Calkins partner, Ruthe Rustin, as well as her seven grandchildren, Noah Fassell, Justin Fassell, Elisabeth Johnson, Lisa Roy, Trey Calkins, Derek Beck and Jeremy Beck; her sister-in-law, Claire LeVardi of Dalton, and many nieces and nephews from the LeVardi and Calkins families. While in her 60s, she took a carpentry class, building items for her beautiful garden.
