Samuel J. Quadrozzi

Samuel J. Quadrozzi, 86, of 55 Gamwell Ave. died Tuesday at home.
He was active in local politics and community affairs, serving two terms as Ward 5 city councilor, from 1958 to 1962.
Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 12, 1919, son of Joseph and Theresa Pullano Quadrozzi, he was a 1937 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he was a member of the varsity basketball and football teams. Following graduation he played semipro basketball in Amenia, N.Y. He was inducted into the Pittsfield Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Southwest Pacific as a technical sergeant with the 67th Portable Surgical Hospital. He participated in the Leyte, Ryukyus and Okinawan invasions. His unit was commended by for its work in treating the wounded in Okinawa. He was awarded several campaign medals.
Mr. Quadrozzi was employed by the former Besse-Clarke on North Street for 40 years as a salesman, buyer and manager of the sporting goods department, retiring in 1983. Before that, he was employed by the former England Brothers department store and at GE in the transformer department.
He was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Holy Name Society.
He enjoyed his daily trips to the Senior Center, trips to the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, hosting trips to Saratoga Race Track, watching sports and fishing. For many years he portrayed Uncle Sam in Pittsfield's Fourth of July Parade.
He was a member of Charles Persip American Legion Post 68, the Knights of Columbus, United Commercial Travelers, and the Faccioli and Rainbow clubs. He was a former venerable of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge, former director of Wild Acres and former president of the Babe Ruth League.
He and his wife, the former Bertha Leidhold, were married July 4, 1952, at Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Cheryl Harper of Middlefield, and Diane Valenti and Linda Harrison, both of Pittsfield; a son, Gary Quadrozzi of West Stockbridge; two sisters, Laura Monterosso of Pittsfield and Nancy Mallory of Fort Myers, Fla.; six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Samuel J. Quadrozzi, 86, who died June 13, 2006, surrounded by his family, will be Saturday at 9:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Mount Carmel Church celebrated by the Rev. Geoffrey Deeker, CSS, pastor.
Burial with full military honors will be at a later date in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or the Ralph Froio Senior Center, both in care of the funeral home.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jay Harper, Melanie Manley, Sarah, Liza and Zachary Valenti, and Samantha Harrison; his great-granddaughter, Liliana Manley; three sons-in-law, Robert Miller, John Valenti and Shaun Harrison; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Korte; a sister-in-law, Ruth Quadrozzi, and his close friend, Dick Briggs.
He was predeceased by two brothers, George and William Quadrozzi. He was well-known on North Street and was often stopped by friends to converse about sports or politics. He made a lasting impression on all who met him. He will forever be in our hearts.
