Lucy Evelyn Leary

Lucy Evelyn Leary, 84, of 83 Highview Drive, Colonial Gardens, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Holyoke on Nov. 23, 1921, daughter of George and Mabel Cunningham Bork, she was a graduate of Holyoke High School and of Providence Hospital School of Nursing.

A registered nurse, Mrs. Leary served as a nursing instructor for licensed practical nurses during World War II.

She was employed as a nurse in Holyoke for many years before moving to Pittsfield.

She was a nurse at the former St. Luke's Hospital in Pittsfield from 1966 to 1973, when St. Luke's and Pittsfield General Hospital merged to form Berkshire Medical Center. She was a head nurse at BMC from 1973 to 1980, as associate unit manager from 1980 to 1982 and as associate unit director from 1982 until her retirement in 1984.

She was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church, a life member of Providence Hospital Alumni and a member of the St. Luke's Hospital Alumni Association.

She enjoyed playing bingo and cheering for the New York Yankees.

Her husband, Philip G. Leary, whom she married April 23, 1949, died May 16, 1990.

She leaves two daughters, Susan A. George of Norfolk, Va., and Elizabeth A. Smead of Pittsfield; two sons, James M. Leary of North Lauderdale, Fla., and Michael E. Leary of North Adams; five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Lucy Evelyn Leary, who died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, will be Saturday, June 17, at 8:45 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 at St. Teresa's Church celebrated by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Leary may be made to the Cancer Institute at Berkshire Medical Center, in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.

Mrs. Leary leaves two daughters-in-law, Donna LaValley-Leary and Lynn Leary; two sons-in-law, Douglas Smead and Joseph George; five grandchildren, Jeremy Smead, Joan and Samantha LaValley-Leary, Sofia George, and Jesse George, and a great-grandchild, Lorraine George.

She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph "Jay" Bork, a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Shea, and a great-grandson, George Crockwell III. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
