Stanley Gardner "Cash" Phelps

Stanley Gardner "Cash" Phelps, 81, of Louisville, Miss., a native and longtime resident of Lenox Dale, died June 5 at Baptist Hospital in Columbus, Miss.

Born Feb. 27, 1925, son of Cassius and Alice Gardner Phelps, he attended local schools.

A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Phelps served from 1951-53 during the Korean War, much of that time in Korea with the Army Corps of Engineers.

He was employed for many years by the Town of Lenox Department of Public Works and for many years had been the custodian at the Lenox Community Center, retiring several years ago.

Mr. Phelps was active in veterans affairs following his military service. He was a life member of both the Mac-Car-Nel American Legion Post in Lenox Dale and the Stickles-Turnure VFW Post in Lenox.

He participated in many Legion and VFW conventions over the years and most recently attended the 2005 American Legion Nation Convention in Hawaii.

For many years he volunteered to decorate the graves of deceased Lenox veterans with American flags in preparation for Memorial Day. Throughout his life he was a country music fan and played steel guitar for the group "Country Cousins" for more than 20 years.

He was a lifelong member of the Lenox Dale Fire Company.

Mr. Phelps leaves his caregivers, Barbara Adkins and Macle Crocker of Louisville, with whom he made his home for the past three years.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside funeral service for Mr. Stanley G. "Cash" Phelps, who died Monday, June 5, 2006, will be Tuesday, June 20, at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox with the Rev. William Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel, officiating.

There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Special Olympics, an organization he was always faithful to, in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240. Never married, Cash is survived by many cousins and good friends from Lenox and all over the state and in Mississippi.

He will also be sadly missed by the staff and patrons of Joe's Diner in Lee, where he had dinner daily until moving to Mississippi three years ago.
