Mary J. Litano Mathes

Mary J. Litano Mathes, 96, of 1000 North St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Calbria, Italy, on Sept. 12, 1909, daughter of Anthony and Rose Sorrenti Monterosso, she immigrated to the United States as a child and attended local schools. She became a citizen in 1972.

Mrs. Mathes was employed by the former St. Luke's Hospital in the dietary department. Before that, she was employed by the former Avaloch Resort in Lenox and by Pittsfield Rye Bakery.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, professional wrestling, thoroughbred horseracing and picking blueberries.

She and her husband, Willard Mathes, were married Dec. 14, 1948. He died July 11, 1981.

She leaves five sons, Frank A. Litano of Memphis, Tenn., Philip A. Litano, Anthony P. Litano, and Charles P. Litano, all of Pittsfield, and John L. Mathes Sr. of Pittsfield; five daughters, Rosemary Bush, Vera Constance Tiffany and Elizabeth Pecholes, all of Pittsfield, Delores Litano of Revere and Patricia Fillio of Lenox Dale; three sisters, Catherine Monterosso, Carmella Moretti and Barbara Mole, all of Pittsfield; two brothers, Charles and James Monterosso, both of Pittsfield; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary J. Litano Mathes, 96, who died Saturday, June 10, 2006, will be tomorrow, June 14, at 8:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
