Edith M. Hornbeck

Edith M. Hornbeck, 86, of Devonshire Estates and, recently, of Mount Greylock Nursing & Rehabilitation Facility, died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Bay Ridge, N.Y., on April 12, 1920, daughter of Herbert and Madeline Walsh McIlroy, she graduated from Baldwin (N.Y.) High School, where she was active in sports and cheerleading, and from Packard School of Business in New York.

She moved to Lee in 1983.

Mrs. Hornbeck was a former executive secretary to the president of Hanover Fire Insurance Co. in New York. She was a charter member of the Baldwin Junior League of Mercy Hospital.

While living on Long Island, she was active in politics and worked for the Board of Elections on election day for many years.

In 1987, she moved to Florida, where she volunteered as a teacher of English as a Second Language to children in the Haines City School District. She returned to Lee in 2000.

She enjoyed playing cards.

Her husband, Stephen P. Hornbeck Sr., whom she married Jan 16, 1949, died Jan. 3, 2003.

She leaves two sons, Thomas M. Hornbeck of Phoenix, Md., and Jonathan M. Hornbeck of Pittsfield; a daughter, Mary Edith Sheffield of Englewood, Ohio; two sisters, Helen Tighe of Tucson, Ariz., and Madeline Sommers of Palm City, Fla., and four grandchildren.

Another son, Stephen P. Hornbeck Jr., died in 1991,

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Edith M. Hornbeck, who died Thursday, June 8, 2006, will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 at St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery.

There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Research Foundation at Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163 in Edith''s memory. KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee is in charge of arrangements.

She also leaves several nieces and nephews. She enjoyed playing cards with her son Jonathan and his wife, Carrie.
