John Hale McNinch Sr.

John Hale McNinch Sr., 64, of Flat Rock, N.C., brother of Robert McNinch of Lenox, died Wednesday at Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C., after a short illness.

Born in Atlanta on Dec. 31, 1941, son of William and Jessie Hale McNinch, he was in the first graduating class, 1960, of Garinger High School in Charlotte, N.C.

He also graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964 and received his law degree from John Marshal Law School in Atlanta in 1977.

A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he served as a pilot from September 1964 to August 1969. He did two tours of duty in the Asian theater and was awarded the Air Medal. He was discharged as a lieutenant.

Mr. McNinch flew Boeing 767s internationally as a captain for Delta Airlines for 32 years, retiring in 2001.

He was a member of the Kenmure Men's Golf Association.

He and his wife, the former Jacqueline Newton, were married 21 years.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Leigh McNinch Kilborn of Shelburne, Vt., and Kelly McNinch Smith of Charlotte; a son, John H. McNinch Jr. of Charlotte; two brothers, William McNinch of Sheridan, Wyo., and five grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- There will be a celebration of the life of John McNinch, who died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, tomorrow, June 10, at 11 a.m. at St. James' Episcopal Church in Hendersonville, N.C., with a reception at the Kenmure clubhouse at 1 in Flat Rock, N.C. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 on Saturday, June 17, at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 505 East Blvd., Suite 101, Charlotte, NC 28203, the Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731, or to the charity of one's choice. THOS. SHEPHERD & SON FUNERAL DIRECTORS, Hendersonville, is in charge of arrangements.

He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Mary; two sons-in-law, David and Rob; two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Susan; five grandchildren, Whipp, Hale and Caroline Kilborn, John Hale McNinch III and James Emerson McNinch, and several nieces and nephews. His first wife, Susan Head McNinch, died in 1983.
